Concrete breakwater protects municipal marina
Gothenburg-based Grefab, the municipal owner and operator of eleven marinas in Sweden, turned to SF Marina for a new floating concrete breakwater to replace a timber palisade at its marina in Hinsholmen.
The decision was made after many years of deliberation, and was spurred on when a geotechnical survey revealed that traditional bottom-founded construction was not feasible. While not directly on Øresund Sound, Hinsholmen Marina is still exposed to wind-driven waves and heavy wakes from passing high-speed ferries. Without protection, its fixed 1,550-slip wooden dock system would suffer damage and require constant repair.
The L-shaped 230m (754ft) x 5m (16ft) breakwater comprises 12 pontoons. Type SF1250 modules are used closest to the shore and extreme-duty SFBW500 units are installed to protect the docks from wave action. Both are secured with two internal 61cm (24in) steel piles. Designed to adapt to future expansion at the marina, they include integrated utility ducts for power and water.
