SPAIN: Marina Port Vell reinforces commitment to sustainability
Marina Port Vell in Barcelona, one of the leading superyacht marinas in the Mediterranean, has implemented an ambitious sustainability master plan backed up by renewal of its EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and ISO 14001 environmental certificates. Most specifically, it has certified its environmental responsibility and commitment via a Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) audit.
The marina’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations Social Governance (ESG) criteria, which aims to reduce carbon footprint.
“We have always worked to ensure the best sustainable practices in our infrastructure but now it is also essential to invest in key ESG actions that pave the way for future sustainable innovations for Marina Port Vell. This not only benefits our teams and the ecosystem around the marina but also our responsibility towards Barcelona, the Mediterranean and the entire community,” says general manager Ignacio Erroz.
The marina is thus prepared to face the new trends that are arising, such as the need to offer new experiences focused on a healthy lifestyle, and preparation of infrastructure that accommodates increasingly innovative vessels with new sustainability requirements.
Practical measures to date include centralising the waste collection service for customers and on-site business, fitting LED lighting and solar panels, and using electric vehicles on site.
Very much involved with the local community of La Barceloneta, Marina Port Vell works to promote sustainable tourism, sustainable urban lifestyles and transportation, and safe working practices.
